ACTION SPOTLIGHT

Help Protect Communities from Deadly Soot
Pollution

Over 63 million Americans experience
unhealthy spikes in daily particle pollution.

Soot exposure can cause increased infant mortality,
cardiovascular disease, asthma, diabetes, and premature death.
And this pollution disproportionately harms communities of color
living near heavily polluting facilities and high-traffic
roadways.

And all of these impacts are exacerbated by heat waves, which are
becoming increasingly frequent due to worsening climate change.

An important new proposal from President Biden’s EPA would
strengthen health protections for deadly soot pollution — but the
administration needs to hear from as many people as possible who
support these vital new standards.

Urge EPA to strengthen safeguards for
dangerous soot air pollution and protect our communities and
health. ( [link removed]

CAMPAIGN UPDATE

Devastating Hurricanes Fiona and Ian
Remind Us of Consequences if Climate Change is Left Unchecked

Hurricane Ian tore a devastating path
through Cuba and Florida. The storm came on the heels of
Hurricane Fiona, which left millions across Puerto Rico without
power.

As our hearts go out to communities devastated by these
hurricanes, we know that while extreme weather events are
unpredictable, the threat that sea level rise adds to each storm
is not. Climate change exacerbates the damage done by routine
storms, and makes powerful storms more likely. Vulnerable
populations often shoulder the greatest burden.

And the mounting economic impacts can’t be ignored: Hurricanes
remain the most expensive weather disasters in the United States.

The recently-passed Inflation Reduction Act is the largest
investment in climate action in U.S. history — the key to
addressing climate change on the unprecedented scale we need to
avert catastrophe. But it's critical that the Biden
administration now work to implement this law as quickly and
aggressively as possible.

Take action: Tell President Biden and
key environmental cabinet officials to keep doing more to fight
the climate crisis. ( [link removed]

BIG WINS

* Congress takes another step forward
to address the climate crisis: The Senate ratified an
international climate treaty — its first in 30 years — to limit
hydrofluorocarbons, climate-warming pollutants that are hundreds
to thousands of times as powerful as carbon dioxide. Reducing
their usage is a big step in our climate fight. Read more > ( [link removed] )

* CO Cancels Highway Expansion, Funds Transit Instead In a huge
victory for clean air, Colorado just canceled a major highway
expansion project to instead fund transit, biking, and walking
infrastructure. This is a smarter transportation solution that
invests in people and communities. Read more > ( [link removed] )

ACTION ROUNDUP

* Earlier this week, we submitted
public comments from 93,430 NRDC and NRDC Action Fund supporters
urging the Biden administration to scrap the lease sales included
in their five-year offshore drilling plan and commit to NO new
lease sales instead. Watch our new video to learn more > ( [link removed] )

* Tell President Biden: Please Remove Toxic Lead Water Pipes
Quickly and Equitably: Millions of old lead pipes contaminate
drinking water in homes in every state across the country, and
the EPA is allowing state water utilities 30 years or more to get
lead pipes out. We need the Biden administration to remove lead
service lines now. Make your voice heard > ( [link removed]

* Tell the Biden Administration to Help States Reduce
Transportation Pollution: A new Department of Transportation
(DOT) proposal would require states to measure greenhouse gas
pollution from their highway and transportation programs and come
up with plans to reduce those emissions. Send a message of
support before the Oct. 13 deadline > ( [link removed]
