The current program will continue but its legality will be tested again before Judge Hanen in Texas.

  • DACA Is Facing a Crisis That the Senate Can No Longer Ignore

More than a decade after the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program was first created to shield certain undocumented youth from deportation, it remains the subject of ongoing litigation. On October 5, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit found that DACA is unlawful and was implemented contrary to federal law. Read More »

 FACTS YOU SHOULD KNOW

  • In the wake of the devastation left behind by Hurricane Ian, migrants are traveling from across the country to lead Florida’s recovery efforts.

Migrants often spearhead recovery efforts after natural disasters, working on a temporary basis in environments that may otherwise be hostile to them. Florida’s own governor has spent the last year waging a political war against migrants.

But this may also offer an opportunity for Floridians to become more welcoming to migrants—who sometimes reside in communities for months or years to finish the rebuilding process.

This special report from the American Immigration Council contains a blueprint on how people from different backgrounds can foster trust and belonging, while also drawing on their similarities and differences to solve community problems.

 ACROSS THE NATION

  • Statistics from the 2020 Census have already shown that the racial and ethnic composition of the United States' populace has become more diverse over time. The voting-age population is reflecting this shift in demographics as younger, more diverse generations become eligible to vote and as an increasing number of immigrants take the significant step of becoming a U.S. citizen.

In anticipation of the upcoming midterm elections, the American Immigration Council has released a special report and interactive map that utilizes Current Population Survey data to depict the states with the most quickly shifting electorates.

 QUOTE OF THE WEEK

“While today’s decision provides a temporary reprieve to thousands of undocumented youth across the country, we should not be fooled. The case is headed back to Judge Hanen’s court in Texas where policies intended to protect immigrants from harsh enforcement have for years gone to die.

“DACA recipients across the nation work in our hospitals, teach our children, manage our businesses, and contribute every day to the American fabric. Doing the right thing for them reflects the values that make this country great. If we fail them, we fail our country. It’s time for Congress to finally deliver.”

– Jorge Loweree, Managing Director of Programs at the American Immigration Council
