Congressman Al Green Partners with Mayor Turner, Commissioner Ellis, Council Member Thomas, and HPD to Host Second Gun Buyback
(Houston, TX) — On Saturday, October 8, 2022, Congressman Al Green released the following statement:
“In July of this year, I partnered with the City of Houston to host a gun buyback to focus positive attention on the elimination of gun violence across the Greater Houston area as well as for our nation. It was a successful event that I was pleased to support and attend. I am also pleased that the City of Houston has set aside $1 million from the $53 million Congress appropriated to One Safe last year for the gun buyback aspect of the program,” Congressman Al Green indicated.
“I am grateful that this gun buyback took place in the Ninth Congressional District and will allow guns from any place in the area to be received using a well-established, no-questions-asked approach,” Congressman Al Green continued. “Gun buybacks are an effective means by which to help reduce crime as well as gun violence in our communities. I urge all persons of goodwill to participate in gun buybacks in an effort to save lives by getting guns off our streets. The epidemic of gun violence and mass shootings must end or it may be our end.”
Harris Country Commissioner Rodney Ellis (Pct. 1) added, “Because of lax gun laws in our state, our community is drowning in guns. We may not control gun laws, but we are not powerless to take guns off the street. We have invested record amounts of resources into public safety initiatives that are smart and tough on crime. Yet, as we’ve seen time and time again, we can pass all the great policies in the world, but at the end of the day, we have to get weapons off the street to keep our community safe.”
