The Heritage Foundation Insider

Hello friends,

We’re on a mission to save America. So, we’re redesigning and renaming the Insider newsletter. We know a weekly email isn’t going to be what saves the country, but we know connecting people, ideas, and action will. The conservative movement’s success has been possible because of partnerships amongst allies. But its durability across generations has been proven as friendships develop and there is mutual passion to, virtuously, build and grow our movement. So, we will highlight and celebrate the scope of activity – in our nation’s capital and in states across America – and promote deeper integration.

Put simply, we know what time it is. As Heritage President Kevin Roberts said at the National Conservatism Conference, we’re here to “rescue America from the barbarians inside the gates of our national institutions." That will take different forms, and we’ll share our ideas over the next few weeks and ask for your input.

Of course, there’s a lot of amazing work underway. A few weeks ago in Atlanta, we had the pleasure of sponsoring the State Policy Network’s Communications Excellence Awards reception – where Commonwealth Foundation, Goldwater Institute, and Pacific Research Institute were recognized for boldly boosting their brand, telling powerful stories, and expanding their audience. Their respective efforts exposed failed California policies, brought new communities into the education choice movement, and advanced academic transparency nationwide.
At that meeting, I celebrated the audience of communicators, noting that communicating is the most important act we undertake. It’s our effort to connect, convey, and drive action. I added:

Events of this morning crystallized three things:
  • First: Who do we do this for?
  • Second: What does it mean when we acknowledge what time it is?
  • Third: What must we do together over the next 12-24 months?
First, as I was watching Queen Elizabeth’s coffin make its way through London, I marveled at the literal and sheer majesty of it all. And despite our special relationship with the UK, it all seemed very foreign. That’s because every American man is a king and every American woman is a queen. That’s the American Royalty we go to work for - every single one of us.

Second, if we’re working for them, they’re in charge of the clock. The American people are clearly telling us what time it is.
  • They’re saying wait a second - what’s with this aggressive centralization of authority in the government that’s dictating what kind of car I can buy, how I cool my home?
  • They’re saying hold on a minute - why is my retirement security under attack by an unelected elite weaponizing capital against my employer and America itself?
  • And they’re yelling stop the clock - who do you think you are to the public education bureaucracy breaking the sacred bond between parents and their children?
The American people are saying these are not inevitabilities — they are in fact incompatibilities.

The left hears this and doubles down. The battle of ideas is today an all-out war.

So, third, and last, what do we do about it?

Let’s win this war.
  • Let’s partner to be better than we’ve ever been and reach more people than we’ve ever reached
  • Let’s stay on offense every day and collaborate to be purposefully asymmetrical
  • Let’s work together to crush the left, suffocate the state, and restore self-governance
Let’s be worthy of our brothers and sisters – the American kings and queens.

Here we go. We’re just getting started.

Andy

P.S. Tim Doescher holds the pen on these updates, though you will occasionally see words from Alexa, Bridget, Lili, Terris, and me. For the last while, our awesome colleague Jarrett Stepman has compiled this email. As he handed the reins to our Outreach team, we want to thank him and remind you his well-crafted columns can always be found at Daily Signal.

P.P.S. On a personal note, some thoughts on my recently passed friend, Mal Kline. Many of you knew Mal; this mailing list has been built over years and reaches across the entire movement. He was passionate about his life’s work – demanding and ensuring  honesty and accuracy in journalism and academia. As one of Stan Evan’s deputies at the National Journalism Center, Mal helped train leading scribes and media personalities. He’s that guy who has nearly 5,000 Facebook friends, and they’re actually real friends. He was a deeply kind man. Salt of the earth. A friend. As Dan Flynn writes in the American Spectator, a good man has left us. RIP, Mal. Thanks for everything.
