A lifelong conservative businessman, Wayne Christian was elected as our 50th Texas Railroad Commissioner (RRC) in November 2016. The RRC regulates the oil and gas industry in Texas. Throughout his first term, Christian developed a strong record of fighting against frivolous regulations and standing strong for free markets and American energy dominance.
Since taking office, Commissioner Christian has been appointed by Governor Greg Abbott to the Interstate Oil and Gas Compact Commission as the Official Representative of Texas. Through this role, Christian has been a national leader on the forefront of fighting against Biden Administration efforts like the Green New Deal, CLEAN Future Act, and the Paris Climate Agreement.
Christian understands that big government increases costs for consumers and kills high paying jobs, while harming our economy, grid reliability, and national security. He believes all regulations should be consistent, predictable, and based on sound science.
A clean environment and a thriving oil and gas industry are not mutually exclusive. Since 1970, the six major pollutants regulated by the EPA have decreased 77% while our economy has grown 285%, population has grown 60%, and our energy consumption has grown 48%.
In 1996, Christian was elected to the Texas House of Representatives as the first Republican elected from Deep East Texas since Reconstruction after the Civil War. During his time in the House, Christian played a key role in electing a Republican majority to the Texas Legislature and kickstarting the conservative renaissance in the State of Texas.
As state representative, Christian served as the President of the Texas Conservative Coalition and earned a reputation as one of the most conservative, liberty-minded elected officials in the State of Texas with A-Ratings from the National Rifle Association, leading pro-life groups, and conservative watchdog and business organizations.
Wayne Christian graduated from high school as valedictorian, and went on to graduate from Stephen F. Austin State University with a B.B.A. in General Business in 1973. After college, Christian found success in the music industry with his country / gospel band, the Mercy River Boys, and went on to be finalist for a Grammy Award in 1979.
In 1987, after gaining valuable experience in business, banking, and real estate, Wayne Christian opened a financial services business where he has been named an AIG top advisor nationwide three times.
Wayne Christian is married to his wife, Lisa, and together they have three daughters and five grandchildren. The Christians are members of the First Baptist Church in Center, where he has served as a member of the Texas Baptist Men’s Laity Board and as a board member of the Shelby County Senior Citizen Corporation of Texas.
