Dear John,
The Amari family barely escaped with their lives from Aleppo, Syria.
I first met them on a research trip to Lebanon last year. They were stuck there — afraid and uncertain for their future — after they were denied entry to the U.S. because of President Trump’s first Muslim ban.
Now, they are making a new home in Virginia — where they thanked us (and you!) for all of our support.
Their story had a happy ending. But countless other refugee families still need your help.
Despite having fled unspeakable violence, many are hungry and cold. They are sick and stranded in overcrowded refugee camps, often with limited medical care and sanitation. They are bracing for the cold winter months that are looming.

When I visited the Amari family in Virginia last month, the kids were watching Mr. Bean, the cartoon, on TV. They generously prepared me a meal — served alongside delicious purple pickled eggplants.
I asked the girls about their new life in Virginia. One said she always dreamed of a house like this. She likes science, history, and cooking pasta. The other, just nine-years-old, said her favorite subject is math and she loves riding a bicycle. She wants to be a surgeon.
It’s hard to believe that just last year, when I first met the Amari family, they were living in limbo in Lebanon — fearful they would never see their new home in the U.S. as promised. Now, they are safe. They are home.
