John,
Yesterday, President Biden took a historic step toward ending the failed war on drugs and mass incarceration by announcing the pardon of all federal simple marijuana possession charges. I applaud this decision as well as his intent to change the scheduling of marijuana as a whole and start the process of reviewing convictions.
On the same day as this announcement, I visited Mary & Main, a local Black-owned cannabis dispensary in Capitol Heights that has been open for nearly four years.
This is what the American entrepreneurial spirit is all about — a family-owned small business that brings economic growth and social good to its community.
This November, voters have the opportunity to legalize recreational marijuana in Maryland — if they adopt this measure, I’ll work to ensure equity within the cannabis industry and to rectify the injustices done to those harmed by the war on drugs and mass incarceration.
As your governor, I’ll fight to expunge the records of those arrested for marijuana possession and undo the racial inequalities in these historic wrongdoings.
To the many minority-owned businesses across Maryland, my message is clear: I cannot wait to work in partnership with you. We’ll build pathways to work, wages, and wealth for every Marylander.
If this is the kind of leadership you’re looking for in your next governor, help our gubernatorial campaign keep up the momentum through Election Day: pitch in $10 or whatever you can afford today to help elect me to fight for you and every Marylander!
