Have you heard the news?
Yesterday, President Joe Biden announced pardons for people convicted on federal charges for simple marijuana possession, a historic first step in the national fight to decriminalize marijuana use and grant individuals a second opportunity at success.
Offenses like these can have a lifetime of consequences. One in three adults has a criminal record that can block their access to jobs, housing, and education, three major components in successful rehabilitation. Those with felony convictions could also face restrictions on their voting rights, leaving them without a voice in our government.
This latest step by President Biden is a major win, but we can’t stop here. Making reentry resources more accessible is the key to recidivism reduction, and LBR’s Clean Slate Act does just that.
The Clean Slate Act challenges these barriers by sealing the records of low-level, nonviolent drug offenders to reduce the risk of re-offense. By correcting the systems that make it more difficult to re-enter society, this bill will make our communities safer and bring renewed hope to those seeking a second chance.
This bill recently passed out of the House Judiciary Committee, team, but we need your help to get it to the House floor for a vote. Will you sign our petition and tell Congress to pass the Clean Slate Act and guarantee a second chance for millions of Americans? We need 3,000 signatures before midnight.
