John — I have been a long supporter of ending the prohibition of marijuana. And yesterday, President Biden took the first step in righting the wrongs of our past.
Biden announced his pardon for all federal offenses of simple marijuana possession. He called on governors across the country to deliver pardons at the state level and recommended the Department of Health & Human Services and attorney general review how marijuana is classified as a drug under federal law.
John, I commend Governor Wolf for following Biden's lead and taking immediate action. Pennsylvania has already begun the process of pardoning people with nonviolent marijuana convictions.
After decades of activists calling for justice, this is a huge step forward. Sign your name next to mine and tell the PA Board of Pardons to pardon all those with nonviolent marijuana convictions.
In the House, I proudly voted 'yes' on the MORE Act to decriminalize cannabis at the federal level and expunge nonviolent federal marijuana convictions. And it included my own Homegrown Act, which ensures small businesses and communities of color are able to share in the success of the booming cannabis industry.
The War on Drugs has taken its toll on our country — mainly Black communities. Not only are people put behind bars, but they are also unjustly stripped of their rights to vote, barred from certain employment, disqualified from federal assistance, and their professional licenses can be revoked.
Biden’s announcement is a step in the right direction toward complete decriminalization and legalization. And we have to keep pushing.
Please join me in urging the PA Board of Pardons to pardon all those with nonviolent marijuana convictions without delay.
Thank you,
Dwight
