We are entering a final sprint to Election Day. Billions of dollars will be spent by Nov. 8. A tidal wave of political advertising is coming.
Dear Friend of OpenSecrets,
We are just hours away from the end of our fall donation drive andI’m asking you to become a first-time donor to OpenSecrets today ([link removed]) .
You might have read my earlier email today. It’s not my intention to spam you, but this is a pivotal moment in our annual fundraising, so I'm reaching out one last time to ask for your help.
We are entering a final sprint to Election Day. Billions of dollars will be spent by Nov. 8. A tidal wave of political advertising is taking over voters’ televisions and social platforms. This money must be tracked and reported ASAP — ideally before ballots are cast.
But for OpenSecrets, the end of the election is just the beginning of the story.
While chasing spending disclosures from the federal government and all 50 states makes up the bulk of our work during the race, post-election gives us a window to interpret trends in the mountain of political spending.
In truth, many of our most groundbreaking investigations come out months after the election, once we have a full accounting of the money.
These investigations reveal the long term trends in money and government accountability and participation, such as our report on fundraising gaps ([link removed]) by candidate race and gender in 2020, the deluge flooding issue campaigns around state ballot measures ([link removed]) , or the millions spent ([link removed]) by the defense industry to maintain its influence in D.C.
What we are able to raise right now determines how aggressively we can expand on this type of research. Help us reach our fundraising goal today so we can be ready for the investigations to come — both through our original reporting and powering other media. ([link removed])
With smaller newsrooms closing left and right, we are honored to receive your continued readership, faith and support. You allow us to remain a nonprofit newsroom, committed to readers like you and dedicated to always following the money — wherever it leads.
Thank you again for following the money with us.
With gratitude,
Sheila Krumholz
Executive Director
