Getting on board for a better MBTA: A forum of workers and riders!
Yesterday, the Public Transit Public Good coalition held a forum for riders and workers to share experiences, build our power, and ensure our voices are heard as we shape the future of the MBTA! During the event, we discussed the most pressing transit issues our MBTA faces today, including the affordability crisis, the need for new revenue, and the unfilled jobs at the MBTA.

We know the MBTA must be made safer and more equitable to truly serve the public good. This is possible if we act collectively to achieve sustainable sources of revenue, and put riders and workers at the forefront of decision-making.

Our coalition is helping shape a better Massachusetts for all by building grassroots power behind Yes on 1 for the Fair Share Amendment and Yes on 4 for safer roads. On November 9, 2022, voters will have the opportunity to reimagine what is possible – a fairer tax system that funds public education and transportation, and a transportation system that gives us all the ability to safely get where we need to go, regardless of immigration status. A YES vote on these initiatives will help Massachusetts put our crisis of safety in the rearview mirror and mend the inequities that burden low-income communities and favor the wealthy.

Chinese Progressive Association’s video contest on the Fair Share Amendment!
The Chinese Progressive Association (CPA) is holding an exciting video contest with prizes in support of the Fair Share Amendment (Question 1 on the ballot for November 9, 2022). Submit a video on why you think it’s important to support the Fair Share Amendment. The video can be in Cantonese, Mandarin, or Taishanese and should be no longer than one minute. Submit your videos by 11:59 p.m. on Saturday, October 8, 2022, to qualify! Winners will be announced on Saturday, October 15!

The New Power of Labor in Massachusetts Forum
Last week, Secretary Marty Walsh joined our Boston communities, legislators, and labor leaders as a keynote speaker for a forum on The New Power of Labor in Massachusetts. As organized labor and worker power grows in every corner of our state and throughout the country, Sec. Walsh emphasized how businesses and workers have a new opportunity to rethink work, and what our economy could look like from the bottom up.

“In discussing the growth of the country’s labor movement, Walsh noted workers in traditionally non-union jobs — warehouse workers, coffee shop employees, media outlets, libraries — are seeking to organize. More and more, Walsh said, the issue is not wages, but respect, and how employees are treated on the job…”

“… Now is the time, he suggested, that employers recognize the desire of employees to form a collective, and to work with them to move the economy forward.”

Boston School Committee approves teachers union contract
The Boston School Committee unanimously approved a new three-year contract with the Boston Teachers Union (BTU), which union members ratified earlier this month. The contract includes a 9.5 percent pay raise for educators over the course of the contract, funds for new hires to help integrate students with special learning needs into general classroom settings, 12 weeks of paid parental leave for all union members, and more! This is not only a huge win for BTU, but also for our students and communities in the greater Boston area.

“Our members’ top priority is always our students and creating the best possible learning experience for our students,” BTU President Jessica Tang said in a statement. “That includes working with the district and the school committee to ensure educators have the tools and resources they need, and this agreement takes major steps towards ensuring that.”
