Dear Friend,
Every October, we celebrate and honor trailblazers who have made significant contributions to expanding LGBTQ rights in the U.S. We also invite everyone—regardless of sexual orientation and gender identity—to learn about the ongoing struggle for LGBTQ equality.
This special month started in 1994, when a Missouri high school teacher named Rodney Wilson advocated for teaching LGBTQ history in the classroom—a subject not widely taught or discussed in public schools. He garnered support from local community leaders and fellow teachers, who chose October to be LGBTQ History Month.
That same year, a group of volunteer attorneys created Immigration Equality! Together with our partners, we’ve been on the frontlines of some of the LGBTQ movement’s most historic victories in the past quarter century—like lifting the HIV travel ban and achieving marriage equality.
