Dear John,
As part of our Disability & Health theme issue, we met with Judy Heumann
to discuss her storied career as an advocate for the rights of disabled
people and to examine the work that lies ahead to achieve equity for
people living with disabilities .
Climate Justice And Disability
In their article featured in the Disability & Health issue of Health
Affairs, Alina Engelman and coauthors write about the climate-related
vulnerabilities
that people with disabilities may encounter during acute events.
The authors suggest that policy makers would benefit from integrating
disability justice into climate and disaster preparedness policies and
practices worldwide.
Engelman and coauthors define disability justice as a framework that
applies across disabilities and that values "access, self-determination,
and an expectation of difference.'"
In their analysis, Engelman and coauthors use brief case studies to
illustrate how disabled people can be agents of change in climate
justice and emergency preparedness efforts spanning the globe.
The authors go on to provide recommendations for developing
disability-inclusive climate and emergency preparedness policies.
You can read their suggestions here
,
and if you want to find additional articles about the intersection of
health and climate, you can revisit our December 2020 theme issue on
