Dear John, Midterm elections are just a month away and there's so much at stake for our LGBTQ+ loved ones. It's critical to fill out your ballot all the way to the bottom. Congress and the President get more coverage for the decisions they make and the laws they pass, but it’s the city and county ordinances, school board resolutions, and state laws that have the greatest impact on your life; PFLAGers across the country have been feeling that impact on a daily basis. Take your state Attorney General (AG) for example, your state's chief legal officer. AGs provide legal advice to your Governor, the legislature, and state boards and commissions, and also represent the state in all cases that relate to the Governor, the General Assembly and most state agencies. For example, in Texas -- where the AG released an opinion that gender-affirming care is child abuse, leading to Child Protective Services actively investigating parents with trans kids -- casting a ballot in the race for state AG had serious consequences for LGBTQ+ people and the people who love them. If the vote had been different in Texas? PFLAG National would never have needed to sue Texas Governor Greg Abbott to protect trans kids. Check out Vote411.org and find out who’s running for AG in your state, their positions on the issues, and make an informed decision when you cast your ballot. Thanks for taking part in the election--your voice and your vote matter! Patrick Cochran (He/Him), Advocacy and Policy Engagement Senior Coordinator PFLAG National P.S.
