Last week, we caught up with Stanley Tucci to ask him a selection of questions submitted by you on CNN's Instagram story. He opened up to us about his favorite foods, the new season of Searching for Italy, and all his travel tips for your next holiday in Italy.
Here's what he said:
Q: Of all the places you've been in Italy, what's your favorite?
It's very hard to say because I love them all. I really love northern Italy. I love the topography; it's so beautiful. Lake Como. The Alps.
Q: What is your favorite childhood dish?
I used to love peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.
Q: Pizza or pasta?
Pasta.
Q: What is your favoritepasta shape?
I like spaghetti because it's versatile. And really simple things like penne. Really simple! You can do a lot with it.
Q: If you were to teach a student to make an easy Italian dish, what would you make?
I would teach them pasta marinara, which is just canned or fresh tomatoes with a little bit of onion, garlic, olive oil, salt, oregano, and basil. You can do so much with that. You can expand it with pasta, rice, and polenta. You can put some mushrooms in it. You can do anything with it. That is the basis of most Italian cuisine.
Q: How long does it take to film each episode?
Each episode takes about nine days to film. We have a day off and a travel day within those nine days.
Q: If you were going to Italy for the first time, where would you recommend going?
I would say to go to Rome first because Rome will give you Italy's authentic flavor. You get to see so much of the architecture of Italy throughout the ages. Plus, you get to experience some amazing food. Historically, it's astounding.
Q: How many people travel with you to make the show?
To make the show, we have about 15 people altogether. We have two cameramen, plus the director of photography. So, we are using three cameras for the most part — or as much as we can. We have a sound recordist. We have some runners who help us with stuff. We have location people. We have producers, drivers, first assistant directors, etc. It's quite a lot. And a big production crew back in London.
Q: Do you have a favorite dessert?
Blueberry pie.
Q: Is there a standout dish from season 2?
There are lots of really great dishes. Season 2 is eight episodes, so it's really hard to say. Lobster catalan is amazing from Sardinia. And bagna cauda from Piedmont is delicious. And the pesto, potatoes, and string beans with pasta from Liguria are great.
Tucci says this season is even better than the first! And if you need more of Tucci's fun wittiness in your life, follow him on TikTok and Instagram.
