Dear John,

The Laureate and Regional Winners of this year’s UNHCR Nansen Refugee Award have been announced. The award honours individuals, groups and organizations that go above and beyond to protect the forcibly displaced and stateless people.

You can check out this year’s winner here, but we wanted to tell you more about the amazing man who gave his name to the award: Fridtjof Nansen.

Fridtjof Nansen was appointed the first High Commissioner for Refugees by the League of Nations and he won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1922 for his work on behalf of people displaced by World War I and its chaotic aftermath, organizing the repatriation of around 450,000 prisoners of war, and arranging famine relief for millions of Russians.

But Nansen wasn’t only a remarkable humanitarian. He was also a diplomat, scientist and polar explorer who inspired and supported the likes of Roald Amundsen, Ernest Shackleton and Robert Falcon Scott.

Intrigued? Then take our quiz to learn more about this extraordinary man and the legacy he left in a multitude of fields:

You’ll be able to find details of our regional award winners on the website, while the ceremony will be livestreamed via our YouTube channel on Monday, 10 October at 19:30 CET.

Thank you,

Breno Valentini
