PROGRAM UPDATES:
Volviendo A Casa
"Returning Home"
Edson Armando Ramirez Medina was a 28-year-old migrant from Trigomil, Nayarit Mexico. He lived with his sisters and parents in Nayarit and worked multiple jobs to help his family. He wanted to build a better future for himself and his family, so he decided to migrate to Tijuana, cross the border and join his aunt in Los Angeles to work. Unfortunately, Edson tragically lost his life while attempting to cross and was found in the Jamul Valley Desert.

Through our Volviendo a Casa program, we were able to coordinate with the Mexican consulate and pay for funeral expenses and transportation back to Nayarit so that his family may say their final goodbyes. May he Rest in Peace.

We are devastated at the loss of another life; we continue to denounce the many policies at work at our southern border, which are the root cause of these tragedies and continue to provide humanitarian aid to those crossing in hopes of preventing more deaths.

Familias Reunidas Bond Program:

We have officially freed 120 people from detention through our Familias Reunidas Bond Fund Program. Isaac is a Ghanaian asylum seeker who was fleeing persecution in his home country because he is part of the LGBTQI+ community. Isaac was incarcerated for an alarming 6 months inside the Imperial Regional Detention Center. Isaac has now been happily reunited with his sponsor in New York thanks to your generous donations.

Every dollar goes towards freeing someone from detention! If your loved one is in the Otay Mesa, Adelanto, or Imperial Regional Detention Center and you need assistance paying for their bond, you can fill out an application here ([link removed]) .

Thank you Aztecs!❤️ 🖤
Title 42 Exemptions
We received more videos of families whom we helped through our Title 42 exemption, a process exclusive to asylum seekers who have been in our supported shelters. This group included Haitian and Central American families, including two children! We even received an update once they were safely in their hotel. We could not do this work without you, and without the amazing partnership with Psicologos Sin Fronteras, B.C.

Thank you for your continued support and for helping us bring this small but incredibly important relief at the border to the families who have been waiting up to two years for a chance to present their asylum case.

Federal appeals court rules 2012 DACA memo unlawful and sends case back to consider Biden administration version
A federal appeals court largely upheld a district court ruling finding that the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program is unlawful but sent the case back to the lower court to decide the legality of a new rule fortifying the program.

DACA, created in 2012, was intended to provide temporary reprieve to undocumented immigrants who were brought to the United States as children, a group often described as “Dreamers.” Many of them are now adults.

There are more than 611,000 immigrants enrolled in the program, according to US Citizenship and Immigration Services. Wednesday’s ruling will not affect those currently in the program, but it will continue to block new applications.

Judge Andrew Hanen, of the Southern District of Texas, ruled in July 2021 that DACA was unlawful and blocked the government from approving new applications for the program. Hanen’s order, however, allowed the program to continue for current enrollees while the case is litigated.

The appeals court preserved the stay in its ruling Wednesday.

Federal court to decide future of DACA in the coming days
October is a daunting time for the 600,000 dreamers who have continued living and working in the U.S. without fear of deportation.

Something that many young immigrants living in the U.S. were unable to do before the Obama-era Program, but all of that could be stripped away in a matter of days.

“Immigrant workers are essential workers, if there’s something we learned in the pandemic is that during the most times of need immigrant were at the front of many industries,” said Francisco Peralta Vargas.

Vargas is one of the 40,000 San Diego dreamers who have been able to almost reach the American Dream.
