Growing up in Mississippi, my family only had one car, so my dad would sometimes have to hitch rides or walk for long stretches of his 30-mile trip home from the shipyards where he worked.

One rainy night, my father failed to return home hours after his shift. Mom got worried. So we piled in the car and went out looking for him. When we found Dad, he was walking along the road, soaking wet and shivering in his shirtsleeves. He explained that he had given his coat to a homeless man he’d met on the highway.

When we asked him why he gave away his only coat, he said: “I knew when I left that man, he’d still be alone. But I could give him my coat, because I knew you were coming for me.”

The lesson I learned that night still resonates with me to this day: none of us succeed alone — when times are tough, we persevere because our family, friends and neighbors will come for us.

I’m running for governor because I am ready to lead Georgia to its next and greatest chapter — where Georgians have healthcare, housing, education and a good living, where Georgians will know that someone is coming for them, too.
