Flores, the district’s current representative, won the seat in a special election after former Rep. Filemon Vela (D) announced his retirement and left Congress earlier this year. The special election took place in the district’s current congressional lines and was not affected by the redistricting process. Still, she will be running under the new district lines in November. A contentious race between 5th Congressional District candidates Lori Chavez-DeRemer, a Republican from Happy Valley, and Jamie McLeod-Skinner, a Democrat from Terrebonne, heated up after a televised debate Monday evening broached disagreements on guns, party politics and the environment. Multiple accusations of lies and cheap politics were slung back and forth throughout the debate as Chavez-DeRemer and McLeod-Skinner answered rapid-fire questions on housing, law enforcement and inflation. |
Laredo Morning Times: Texas Sen. Ted Cruz campaigns for Cassy Garcia in Laredo. During the event, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz and his father Pastor Rafael Cruz, Rep. Chip Roy (TX-21) and National Border Patrol Council #2455 President Hector Garza touted Garcia as the best candidate for the congressional district. They all stated that Garcia could potentially provide another upset like Rep. Mayra Flores (TX-34) did in her district, as the predominantly Democratic area turned red in a special election earlier this year. . |
