Biden Looks to Russian-Allied, Communist Venezuela for Oil Production
Washington Examiner: Republicans took aim at President Joe Biden following reports that he is considering providing significant sanctions relief to Venezuela’s government in order to allow Chevron to resume pumping oil there, clearing the way for the resumption of crude exports to the West. According to the proposed deal, the Biden administration would grant sanctions relief to Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro on the condition that he resumes long-stalled talks with political opposition on conditions needed to hold free and fair presidential elections in 2024. The proposal comes one day after OPEC+ members announced they would cut oil production by 2 million barrels per day, delivering a significant blow to the Biden administration, which had lobbied extensively for the oil producers not to reduce their output and squeeze the energy markets further ( Washington Examiner). David Harsanyi: Keystone XL was scheduled to open in a few months. Seems like a such a thing might have been useful ( Twitter)! Guy Benson: The president has been frantically emptying the strategic reserve here at home, which is meant for real emergencies, not political ones. And now he’s apparently prepared to let Maduro and his Communist brethren ramp up their production, too. This White House has been openly hostile to US production from day one, and that dogmatic intransigence is having an impact ( Townhall).

GOP Senator Ben Sasse Expected to Resign to Take Position at University of Florida
NBC: Sen. Ben Sasse, R-Neb., who frequently clashed with former President Donald Trump but won a second term in 2020, is expected to resign before the end of the year. Sasse is expected to exit the Senate to take a new job leading the University of Florida, the source said. The senator and the university confirmed that Sasse is in talks for the top job there after news broke on Thursday ( NBC). Politico: Nebraska governor Pete Ricketts (R) would then appoint a replacement for Sasse under state law, with the seat then up for a special election in 2024. One of the people familiar with Sasse’s plans said Ricketts himself is viewed as a potential appointee for the seat ( Politico). CNN: The University of Florida’s presidential search committee voted unanimously to name Sasse as their sole finalist for president of the university, the source said. Now, Sasse will go to Florida and meet with students and staff. Then there needs to be a vote by the University of Florida board of trustees and board of governors to formalize the process. All that is expected to happen over the next several weeks and into November ( CNN).

Eligible Californians to Receive Up to $1,050 to “Help Address Rising Costs”
ABC: Millions of qualifying Californians will receive up to $1,050 as part of the state’s Middle Class Tax Refund program starting this week. The first round of payments are set to go out Friday. Approximately 23 million taxpaying California residents are eligible to receive the payments, with smaller payments going to higher earners. The payments, which are technically tax refunds, are meant “to help address rising costs,” according to Gov. Gavin Newsom’s office. To be eligible, you must have filed your 2020 tax return by last October and make less than $150,000 per year. If you are eligible, there is no action to take. You will receive a payment automatically without an application process ( ABC). Charles Cooke: “California will start handing out $1,050 stimulus payments to residents this week to combat inflation” ( Twitter). Handing out free money to millions of residents will undoubtedly increase inflation.

Latino Voters Flip on Democrats
National Review: Questions remain, however, about just how far the GOP’s inroads can go with Hispanics. Republicans have been predicting a Latino realignment toward the GOP for decades — Ronald Reagan famously declared that “Latinos are Republicans. They just don’t know it yet” ( National Review). Mark Murray: This was maybe the most fascinating finding from our recent NBC News/Telemundo poll: Conservative Latinos went from D+9 in congressional preference in 2012 (per our merged polls), to R+56 now. That’s a net 65-pt swing ( Twitter). Townhall: Biden’s approval ratings are atrocious among Hispanic voters. There are a host of issues to explain the changing voting attitude among Hispanics, but for the Left to degrade the Spanish language because it’s gendered and that might offend the weirdos in the Democratic Party base is peak wokeness ( Townhall).

5th Circuit Appeals Court Declares DACA Unlawful
Just the News: A federal appeals court declared Wednesday that the Obama-Biden era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program was illegal, dealing a major blow to a liberal initiative that allowed illegal migrants who came to America as children to escape deportation. The ruling by the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals also sent the case back to U.S. District Judge Andrew Hanen for further consideration, temporarily leaving DACA in place for current beneficiaries ( Just the News). Fox News: In a statement, the president called the decision “unlawful” and urged Congress to make permanent legislative protections to help more than 600,000 immigrants currently protected by DACA. “I am disappointed in today’s Fifth Circuit decision holding that DACA is unlawful. The court’s stay provides a temporary reprieve for DACA recipients, but one thing remains clear: the lives of Dreamers remain in limbo,” Biden said ( Fox News). ABC: Under the current set of decisions, and with the case now sent back to the district court, DACA can accept no new applications but recipients will be allowed to renew their applications. DACA enrolls some 600,000 people, commonly referred to as “Dreamers,” who were illegally brought to the U.S. as children ( ABC).

Biden Pardons All Federal Offenses Pertaining to Possession of Marijuana
The move comes just before the tightly contested midterm elections. CBS: President Biden is pardoning all prior federal offenses of simple possession of marijuana, the White House announced Thursday, although senior officials stressed to reporters that there are currently no people currently in federal prisons solely for simple possession of marijuana. The president is also asking the Health and Human Services secretary to review how marijuana is classified under federal law. In addition, the president is urging all governors to pardon state offenses of simple marijuana possession. Liberals have long pressed Mr. Biden to legalize cannabis. The announcement, which falls short of legalization, comes barely a month out from competitive midterm elections that will determine control of the House and Senate ( CBS). CNBC: More than 6,500 individuals with prior convictions for simple marijuana possession were impacted by the pardons, a White House official said, and thousands more through pardons under D.C. law. The pardons will not be extended to those who weren’t U.S. citizens and were illegally in the country at the time of their arrest ( CNBC).

Federal Agents Believe They Have Enough Evidence to Charge Hunter Biden with Tax Crimes, Falsifying Statements
Washington Post: Federal agents investigating President Biden’s son Hunter have gathered what they believe is sufficient evidence to charge him with tax crimes and a false statement related to a gun purchase, according to people familiar with the case. The next step is for the U.S. Attorney in Delaware, a Trump administration holdover, to decide on whether to file such charges ( Washington Post). Insider: An indictment against Hunter Biden would mark the biggest test yet of the president’s pledge to restore independence and public trust in the Justice Department ( Insider). Spencer Brown: It remains to be seen whether Hunter Biden is actually charged based on the supposedly sufficient information to support charges — and whether he receives preferential treatment due to his family and the position of his father as supposed leader of the free world ( Townhall).

Squad Member Cori Bush Goes All in on “Defund the Police” Movement
Julio Rosas: Congressman Cori Bush (D-MO) continues to lead the “Defund the Police” charge despite Democrats largely stepping away from such rhetoric amid the current crime crisis. During her interview with CNN host Don Lemon, Bush said she does not believe progressives went to far by advocating taking money away from police departments when riots were breaking out in cities across the country ( Townhall). RNC Research: CNN’S DON LEMON: “If you could do it again, would you still double down or use that slogan ‘defund the police?’” DEMOCRAT REP. CORI BUSH: “Absolutely” ( Twitter). Jason Rantz: Rep. Cori Bush continues to defend the deadly defund police policies ( Twitter).

Peloton to Cut 500 Additional Jobs to Keep Company from Going Under
Wall Street Journal: Peloton Interactive Inc. said it plans to cut about 500 jobs, roughly 12% of its remaining workforce, in the company’s fourth round of layoffs this year as the connected fitness-equipment maker tries to reverse mounting losses. Chief Executive Barry McCarthy, who took over in February, said he is giving the unprofitable company about another six months to significantly turn itself around and, if that fails, Peloton likely isn’t viable as a stand-alone company. The job reductions, announced to staff on Thursday, will leave Peloton with roughly 3,800 employees globally, less than half the number of people the company employed at its peak last year. It also has eliminated about 600 more jobs since June than previously disclosed through retail store closings, attrition and other moves, Peloton said ( Wall Street Journal). CNN: In a memo shared with CNN Business, McCarthy told employees that “this is a necessary step if we are going to save Peloton, and we are.” He added that its retail operations has lost more than $100 million last year. The company announced in August that it was closing a substantial amount of its 86 retail stores in North America ( CNN).

Trans Defense: Seattle Hacker Gets Probation Due to “Mental Health and Transgender Status”
Fox 13: A former Seattle tech worker convicted of several charges related to a massive hack of Capital One bank and other companies in 2019 was sentenced Tuesday to time served and five years of probation. U.S. District Judge Robert S. Lasnik said sentencing former Amazon software engineer Paige Thompson to time in prison would have been particularly difficult on her “because of her mental health and transgender status,” the Department of Justice said in a statement… Thompson, 37, obtained the personal information of over 100 million people — a data breach that prompted Capital One to reach a $190 million settlement with affected customers. The Treasury Department fined the company $80 million for failing to protect the data ( Fox 13). HotAir: Thompson uploaded some of that data to her personal GitHub site which is how she got caught. Someone noticed the data and notified Capital One that it was out there. Capital One verified it was their data and contacted the FBI. Thompson never sold or profited from the stolen data but the complaint noted that she apparently intended to do so ( HotAir).
