Hello — this is a long email, but it’s very important that you read it.

This week, we marked 100 days since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, and millions of people across our country saw their access to abortion ripped away. Please give me a moment to explain what a post-Roe reality has looked like in Wisconsin.

Roe v. Wade prevented a cruel abortion ban that was passed in 1849 from going back into effect. Now, abortion is a felony in our state. The draconian law provides NO exceptions for rape or incest. Patients can’t access the health care they need. Doctors could go to jail for doing their jobs. It’s horrific.

When this criminal abortion ban was first passed, the Civil War was still over a decade away, women didn’t have the right to vote, and my state didn’t have electricity or running water. This archaic law is what governs Wisconsin now that Roe is gone.

Earlier this year, Governor Tony Evers called for a special session of the state legislature to repeal it. But the Republican majority took less than 60 seconds to gavel in and out — shutting down any debate and refusing to take action to protect Wisconsinites’ reproductive rights.

Just last month, the governor called for another special session to create a process for statewide referendums in Wisconsin, which would allow voters to directly challenge and repeal the criminal abortion ban. Again, Republican legislators gaveled in and out in under a minute and blocked any opportunity to allow the people to decide on laws that affect their health.

The overwhelming majority of Wisconsinites support safe, legal access to reproductive health care. They deserve to have a say in our abortion laws. But when it comes to reproductive freedom in our state, the will of the people isn’t the law of the land right now.

One of the most important things we can do to change that is by ensuring Governor Evers is re-elected and that his veto power is secure — this is our last line of defense for abortion rights in Wisconsin.

Look, we know what will happen if Republicans continue to gain power. They have already laid out a dangerous agenda that will further restrict abortion access in the state. So I won’t mince words with you here: A GOP-controlled legislature with a veto-proof supermajority in Wisconsin should scare the hell out of all of us.

Here’s why: Governor Evers has vetoed NINE anti-abortion bills while in office — dangerous and restrictive bills that will come back and become law if Republicans gain a supermajority and have the power to override his veto. We need to fight back for Wisconsin, for the country, and for our democracy because what happens here will affect everyone.

I’m doing everything I can to help elect six pro-choice Democratic women running in the most competitive state legislative races in Wisconsin — because if we win these seats, we can block a GOP supermajority and save the governor’s veto.

Unfortunately, with so many important elections happening across our state this November, their biggest challenge has been fundraising. That's why, today, I’m asking you to join me in supporting these candidates with a contribution of any amount.

Our fight for abortion rights in Wisconsin has never been more important. Can you chip in any amount to help us elect six pro-choice Democratic women to the state legislature? With your support, we can block a GOP supermajority by electing leaders who will fight for our reproductive freedom. [[link removed]]

I support these six women because they believe — as I do — that YOU should have the power to make your own personal health care decisions, not politicians. And I know they won’t stop fighting until that happens.

Anything you can contribute to help us elect more pro-choice women and save the governor’s veto in Wisconsin will make an important difference.

Forward,
