John, we told you this was going to be bad. Gov. Youngkin has been trying to slither away from the RGGI, a climate initiative passed by the Virginia legislature and signed into law by former Gov. Ralph Northam, but now Virginians are facing the consequences of his actions.

Let’s be clear here: Youngkin cannot single-handedly cancel a law that was passed by the state legislature. What he’s doing instead is far more insidious. He is trying to slowly cancel certain aspects of the RGGI through budgetary discretion.

Youngkin’s scheme is already hurting one of Virginia’s biggest cities. The mayor of Alexandria, Justin Wilson, says revenue for flood damage Northam sent to his city under the RGGI is being taken out from under him.

Wilson said, “We’ve used the revenues to deal with flood mitigation projects here in the community”, further pointing out that, “some of the areas…where we’ve seen the most flooding have been really poor areas of the Commonwealth.” Now all of that is under threat, thanks to a governor who is out of touch and desperately seeking a promotion.

John, floods like we saw this weekend are a dire, and ever-present, part of our climate crisis. But, Gov. Youngkin wants to quietly take away funding for our communities to cope with their fallout. We need to put a stop to his agenda and elect leaders who put our people first. WIll you contribute $5 to help elect Hala and fortify our check on his power?
