The year was 1981. Inflation was 11.89% in Great Britain. Unemployment was 9.6%. Everyone — even members of her own party — expected British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher to cave and abandon her conservative economic agenda. They expected her to do a “U-turn.”
Instead, she offered one of the most famous lines of her tenure: “You turn if you want to. The lady’s not for turning.”
