John,
Today
marks two years since Trump tweeted “the
United States Government will not accept or allow transgender individuals to
serve in any capacity in the U.S. Military.” This thoughtless tweet is now
being implemented and directly affect the livelihoods of thousands of
transgender service members.
When
this started, we emailed you promising we’d continue to:
- Call on
members of Congress to overrule President Trump by supporting bipartisan legislation to stop the ban
- Weigh in
against the trans military ban in the courts
- Bring
trans military veterans and current trans service members—who’ve patriotically
served our country with honor—to Capitol Hill to educate with lawmakers
We’ve
checked all those boxes and because of your generous support, we’ve been able
to do even more. In addition to the above, we’ve worked closely with the
Pentagon to continue demonstrate that there this ban is unsupported by facts. Two
weeks ago, thanks to NCTE’s work, the US House of Representatives passed an
amendment to defund any attempt to enforce this ban.
But we are not done. There is much more work to do. We will not allow this attack on
transgender service members to continue. We will continue fighting. We
will not back down until transgender people can serve and are treated with the
dignity and honor they deserve. Take a stand with us today by becoming a sustaining
member of the NCTE Action Fund.
The
ban on the military service of transgender people is now actively harming our
community the way that many of us feared it would. Transgender service members
who have served with dignity and distinction are being torn from their careers.
Young recruits are losing ROTC scholarships effectively denying their dreams.
And state national guards are being forced to choose between the bigoted policy
of the Commander-In-Chief or the service of their valued transgender troops.
We
cannot stop now. We cannot let
an incompetent administration guided by a thoughtlessly destructive President
stand in our way.
We cannot let this shameful ban
continue. With
your help, we will continue to fight for the service members who have signed up
to risk their lives for our nation.
This
disgraceful ban degrades the service of transgender people while sending a
dangerous message to every employer—every American—that transgender people are
less deserving of the same opportunities as anyone else. Thank you for your support to help us
continue to protect transgender troops,
our military, and the dignity of our own legacy.
In
solidarity,
Mara
