Let me give you some insight into what I mean when I say that helping the community is in my DNA.
My parents emigrated from Guatemala – my mother was still pregnant with me when she arrived. From there, they found cheap housing above Humboldt Park United Methodist Church in exchange for janitorial jobs.
My parents didn't raise my siblings and me to be scared of hard work. I was regularly working with my mother in the soup kitchen and food pantry. While my mother would cook enough for 100 men at a time, I was stuck on who the people were and how they got here.
I continued to volunteer at the church after we moved out and became the church "mail lady" at 17. But I was constantly working to connect those experiencing homelessness to resources like job leads, food stamps, and other public benefits. I kept asking "Why can't we do more?"
At the end of the day, I want to do more for our communities, for our students, for our families NOW. But most of all, I want to do more for YOU. With November just around the corner, will you donate whatever you can ASAP so that we can start doing more together? [[link removed]]
