Friend,

Here at Groundwork, we like to call our states the “real” battlegrounds – the places where the fight for our democracy will be won or lost.

Just look at what’s happening out of Alabama this week. On Tuesday, oral arguments began in the Supreme Court on Merrill v. Milligan – a federal challenge to the State of Alabama’s recently-drawn congressional districts that would effectively gut Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act (VRA). You’ll remember that it was another court case out of Alabama, Shelby v. Holder, that significantly weakened the VRA nearly ten years ago.

Section 2 of the VRA currently outlaws denying the right to vote “on account of race or color.” The congressional map that Alabama enacted in fall of 2021 was found by a lower court to dilute voting strength of Black Alabamians and was therefore blocked. Instead of accepting the court’s ruling, Alabama’s Secretary of State took it all the way to the Supreme Court.

Groundwork Grantee Alabama Values Progress and our good friends at Alabama Forward have been activating and organizing on this case for months with their Power on the Line campaign. Power on the Line is a pro-democracy social movement for fair maps and equal representation, built from the ground up in Alabama.

Alabama Values Progress and Power on the Line are the types of organizations and movements that Groundwork is here to support. They’re on the frontlines of the fight for democracy and we’re here to support them however we can. So please, click here to support the fight: [link removed]

Before I let you go I also wanted to personally thank you for the birthday wishes this week. Seeing Groundwork make so much progress in such a short amount of time is the best gift of all and you being here makes all the difference. Thank you so much.

Thanks,

Joe
