Friend, I’m often asked why I decided to run for the 10th Senate District back in 2019.
The truth is, as an immigrant who had lived in America for 50 years, I was beginning to hear a constant message from some political leaders in Washington that some people were no longer welcome in this country.
But I knew that this message was not true. I knew that America’s strength, resilience, and beauty comes from its diversity. I knew that the richness of America’s vast tapestry comes from its indigeneous communities and the many people from throughout the world who have gathered on this soil.
I knew that some people in Washington were trying to sell a false story – and it was time for me to stand up and speak out. Representation matters, and I had a responsibility to represent communities that are too often marginalized in political spaces.
The past three years have been a whirlwind in many regards, and I’m proud of the work we’ve done and the progress we’ve made.
This October, we’re having a special event to commemorate this progress and to celebrate the story of this Commonwealth’s rich heritage – in all of its glory.
I’m writing to invite you to join us for Virginia’s Immigrant Story, the inaugural signature fundraising event for my campaign.
We’re immensely honored to be joined by guest speaker Khizr Khan, along with a variety of other community members whose unique stories weave together a common theme of journeys, hard work, sacrifice, successes, and immense gratitude.
I hope that you’re able to join us on Sunday, October 16, from 3-5pm for a celebration of culture and diversity in Virginia.
You can learn more about the event and reserve your spot here.
I hope to see you there,
Senator Ghazala Hashmi
