We live in an age where everything is overdesigned. Your phone is just the
beginning. You can’t seem to buy a vacuum, a toaster, or a fan without a
touchscreen, WiFi linkup, and all that entails. Sometimes it’s overly
complicated. Sometimes, it adds to the use and value of the thing. But when it
comes to toys, it misses the point.

Toys help kids play. Playing is social, an act of learning and observing,
interacting and communicating. Through an object, kids can see each other and
the world. High-minded and lofty? You bet. In a world filled with screens and
connectivity, it’s also awesomely simple.

This simplicity was our guiding principle as we went about choosing our favorite
toys of 2022. We eschewed screens, movie tie-ins, and other technical and social
complexities for toys that invite communication, interaction, imagination, and
movement. Whether you’re searching for a toy for a toddler, grade-schooler, or
tween (or yourself) we’re sure you’ll find something great among the selections
below.

PLAY ON!

Two Important Tips For Encouraging Creative Play

Prevent Kids From “Self-Screening” It’s important that parents encourage kids’
questions, no matter how ludicrous or funny they may seem. “We never want a
child to ever think that there’s a dumb question,” says Alan Kazdin, Ph.D.,
professor of psychology and child psychiatry and head of the Yale Parenting
Center. “Letting a child think there is a dumb question means they’re already
learning to self-screen, when in fact, being creative and imaginative is about
opening up and not self-screening.”

Scatter the Playroom With Creative Toys “Bring in things that are novel, and
leave them around for the child to tinker with,” says Kazdin. Wooden blocks.
Musical instruments. Whatever you have available. Now, an essential point to
remember is that you can’t just leave imagination-generating toys on the ground
and walk away. You need to actively play with, and respond to, your kid.
Parenting an imaginative kid means getting on the ground with them and
pretending you’re a dinosaur, too.
Here are a few more tips for fostering creative play.
