We heard you loud and clear, and we are once again offering an in-person conference from June 30 - July 3, 2023 (preconference June 29) in Orlando, Florida, and a virtual conference July 10 - July 12. Presenting at NASN’s annual conference allows you to: Introduce fresh ideas and improvements to benefit school health services and the students and communities we serve. Advocate for and educate on key areas of practice. Highlight models of practice and interprofessional collaboration. Create awareness of your research to a worldwide audience of school health leaders. Gain visibility as a leader in school health services. NASN will again have both an in-person conference, June 30 - July 3, 2023, (preconference 6/29) in Orlando, FL, and a virtual conference July 10 - 12. School nurses, researchers, and all focused on supporting students and school health services are encouraged to submit presentations. Presentation modes for In-person NASN2023 are General, Breakout, Workshop, Preconference, and e-Poster sessions. Presentation modes for Virtual NASN2023 are General and Breakout sessions. All submissions are due November 16, 2022, at noon ET. School district websites engage in diverse health promotion practices surrounding immunization, from encouraging vaccination to neutral messaging and to encouraging exemptions. Up to 10 Community Grants to plan and implement collaborative projects to advance chronic condition management in schools, each worth up to $12,500, are available to qualified applicants. Funded projects must establish teams that include representatives from the following sectors: (1) schools and/or school districts and (2) local pediatricians and/or pediatric residents. Community organizations/local health departments are also invited to apply and must include the above two sectors on the project team. The application deadline is Friday, October 21, 2022. Using the WSCC Model to Implement Wellness Policies and Sustain Chronic Health Condition Management in Schools School nurse involvement with school wellness policies is critical to ensure the overall health and well-being of students are addressed. The ‘gold standard’ model school wellness policy developed by the Alliance for a Healthier Generation was updated in June 2020. This course offers information on the updated model wellness policy that now includes recommended language to address all 10 components of the Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child (WSCC) Model and the (2020) NASN supplemental language to address chronic health condition management – positioning the school nurse to be able to fully participate when schools review and refresh current school wellness policies. NASN Blog: Communicate You Care "Advocating for student-centered care means engaging and educating the family," writes Nichole Bobo, MSN, RN, NASN Director of Nursing Education, in a recent blog post. "A PCORI-funded (Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute) study of children and teens with mild persistent asthma found that using the control inhaler as needed worked the same as daily use in improving asthma control, the number of asthma flares, how well the lungs work, and quality of life. Do you know if your students with mild persistent asthma and their families know about this new evidence-based approach to care? Knowing what you know about your students, based on your ongoing holistic nursing assessment of these students, would this evidence-based option to asthma management be a better approach for controlling asthma symptoms?" HHS Announces Initiative to Further Address Health Inequity The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is now taking more steps to address inequities in the treatment of COVID-19. AAP Issues New Guidance for Head Lice in Schools New guidance from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) issued September 26, 2022, lists several treatment options and reiterates its stance that forcing a child with lice to stay home may do more harm than good. "Some schools have instituted a “no-nit” policy, referring to the egg of a louse or the empty shell casing, but both the AAP and the National Association of School Nurses (NASN) suggest discontinuing the practice. Nits very often don’t translate to crawling lice, and keeping a child out of school can be a burden for both the child and the parents." View the article. Bridging the Gap Between Vision Screening Referrals and Confirmatory Eye Examinations The National Center for Children’s Vision and Eye Health at Prevent Blindness is hosting a free webinar on Wednesday, October 19, 2022, from 2 – 3:30 p.m. ET, where you can learn strategies for overcoming some barriers to eye care, including common challenges and cultural beliefs.
