Friend — Joe Manchin, one of the fossil fuel industry’s favorite senators, threw in his cards last week.

He had been trying to ram a dirty energy permitting bill into the must-pass spending resolution that keeps the federal government open. Fossil fuel special interests were attempting to use the bill rider to weaken the 1970 National Environmental Policy Act and eliminate key regulatory safeguards in order to fast-track new fossil fuel infrastructure.

But thanks to the hard work of climate champions in Congress like California representatives Mike Levin, Katie Porter, Jared Huffman, and Alan Lowenthal, the dirty permitting rider is dead.

We can’t rest easy just yet, friend.

We know Senator Manchin and his fossil fuel allies are going to try to sneak their dangerous legislation into future spending bills.

We need to make sure our representatives in Congress hold the line.

Senator Manchin’s policy would have fast-tracked new fossil fuel pipelines, even as the climate crisis and extreme weather events force evacuations across the country.

Contacting our elected officials to let them know when we oppose something is important, but it’s equally important to let them know we are in their corner when they do the right thing.
