LGBTQ History Month: A Month of Shared Experience
Read Now: What the Equality Act Could Mean

Happy October, Friend.

This month is LGBTQ History Month! We are proud to honor the history of our community — where we’ve been and where we’re going now. At the root of our history is a dedication to taking care of one another — and we are honored to continue that work every single day as we show up for young people in need of support.

October is special, and we’re excited to honor the intersectionality of our LGBTQ community. We’ll be celebrating LGBTQ History Month all month long, and also so much more. We’ll also be honoring many of our Trevor community in October — the month that also shares Latinx and Hispanic Heritage Month, Indigenous People’s Day, World Mental Health Day, National Coming Out Day, Asexual Awareness Week, and Intersex Awareness Day.

This LGBTQ History Month, we take time to recognize and honor the many trailblazers who made progress so that we can continue activism efforts today — from those at The Stonewall Rebellion (1969) like Marsha P. Johnson (1945 - 1992) and Sylvia Rivera (1951 - 2022); to activists like Bayard Rustin (1912 - 1987) and artists like Audre Lorde (1934 - 1992). We’ll be sharing more of our community’s history throughout this month.

In the present, LGBTQ young people continue to face barriers to joy and self-actualization, and encountering hateful rhetoric and legislation across the country negatively affects their safety and mental health. The Trevor Project is dedicated to protecting young people from those threats, and just one of the ways we do that is through our advocacy work.
