Dear friend,

Potassium bromate. Titanium dioxide. BHT. These chemicals are all linked to serious health issues and are commonly found in our food because the FDA has failed to act.

It’s the FDA’s responsibility to keep our food safe and healthy, but they have woefully failed in their duty. Nearly 99 percent of food chemicals introduced since 2000 were approved by the food and chemical industry, NOT the FDA.

The FDA is reviewing its human foods program and is asking the public to weigh in. This is our chance to urge the agency to take our health seriously and get dangerous chemicals out of our food, but we only have until October 7 to make our voices heard.

Just take a look at some of the worst chemicals EWG’s research has found in our food:

* Potassium bromate, a carcinogenic chemical used in bread, banned in Europe and found in more than 130 packaged foods.
* Titanium dioxide, a DNA-damaging additive found in more than 3,000 packaged foods. The EU deemed this chemical “no longer safe for human consumption,” but the FDA hasn’t reviewed it in more than 50 years.
* BHT, which can disrupt thyroid functions and is found in popular cereals like Cap’n Crunch and Apple Jacks.
