LEGAL UPDATES FROM SANTA FE DREAMERS PROJECT

The Fifth Circuit issued their decision in the legal case that represents the potential fate of the DACA program. As of today, no changes are in effect regarding eligibility for DACA - the lower court's order preventing new applicants from being granted DACA status remains in effect, and current DACA recipients are still permitted to renew their DACA status. The Fifth Circuit sent the case back to the District Court for Judge Hanen to review the new DACA Final Rule, which is set to take effect on October 31. With this rule, the Texas court's order largely affirmed by the Fifth Circuit, it's clear that DACA's legal foundation is as shaky as ever.

If you are concerned about your own DACA status or if your DACA is expiring soon, please come see us at our walk-in legal clinics for DACA recipients. Immigration Conversations

A Speaker Series hosted by Santa Fe Dreamers Project

We are excited to be launching a new, year-long community education project this fall called Immigration Conversations. Through this series of monthly events, we hope to create spaces and opportunities for our community to gather together for deep learning about topics in immigration law, policy, history and current events.

SAVE THE DATE!

Our first Immigration Conversations event will be focused on DACA and will be held October 19 in Santa Fe at the Southside Library from 5:30-7, and will also be available via livestream. If you are confused about the seemingly unending litigation and attacks on DACA and want to learn with us, please save the date and stay tuned for more information about this event soon!

Fall Updates From Santa Fe Dreamers Project

  • We are excited to be partnering in new ways with our friends at New Mexico Dream Team! We will be teaming up to provide free legal consultations at the Dream Team's monthly Rental Assistance Clinics, where Dream Team staff will be assisting individuals in applying for rental assistance. The first clinics were held last month at Ernie Pyle Middle School in Albuquerque - stay in touch with us on our social media for details about future clinics!
  • In our continued efforts to stabilize our finances in light of all the economic hurdles caused by the pandemic, Santa Fe Dreamers Project has begun to charge legal fees for some of our services. While this is a big change for us, we are committed to keeping our services accessible to our clients by charging fees that are less than a third of the fees most private law firms charge. We will also be able to offer completely free services to all clients who need them, as well as all applicants for humanitarian protections. We commit that no client will be turned away due to inability to pay. Free services will continue to be provided thanks to the generous and faithful support of our donors and funders. We hope that this change will help us protect our program capacity and ensure our stability and longevity moving forward.
  • Santa Fe Dreamers Project has a new Executive Director! After two years of dedicated service, our Interim Executive Director, Michael Santillanes, has stepped down from this role, and our legal director, Emma O'Sullivan, is now serving as Executive Director. Emma has been with SFDP since 2016 and is excited to support the staff and programs into our next season.
