NEW OFFSHORE DRILLING IS A STEP BACKWARD ON CLIMATE

The Department of the Interior released a draft plan to allow new oil and gas drilling leases in our oceans. If approved, this will make us more dependent on fossil fuels for decades at a time when we need to be doing everything possible to transition to cleaner sources of energy.

To stop these leases from moving forward, public input will be absolutely essential. We must fight for policy rooted in science to help prevent future climate disasters and protect communities against pollution.
TAKE ACTION

The science couldn't be more clear: our climate cannot afford more oil and gas production.

More leasing for offshore drilling will only lock us into decades of fossil fuel destruction and dependency — and would not influence prices at the pump or on your energy bills for years.

Instead of propelling us forward, the proposed offshore oil and gas leases would set us backward on a dangerous path, paving the way for more climate pollution, more toxification of marine ecosystems, and more environmental injustices that disproportionately impact low wealth communities and communities of color.

We only have a limited time to stop these environmental disasters. Tell the Department of the Interior that they must prevent new offshore drilling leases to meet our nation's climate goals and protect coastal communities.

Congress recently passed the most comprehensive climate legislation ever, putting us on a path to reduce carbon pollution by 40% by 2030. But scientists agree: if we want to prevent some of the worst impacts of climate change for future generations, then we need to reduce emissions closer to 50% by 2030.

We cannot reach this goal that science demands of us if we continue to expand fossil fuel infrastructure.

To protect our coastal communities, marine life, public health, and climate from unimaginable risk, tell the Biden Administration to prevent new plans for offshore drilling.

Thank you for standing up for science-backed policy that helps protect our communities and climate.

Sincerely,
