Kaporos Chicken Rescue Supporter Pledges Matching Donation!

Dear Friends,

We’re delighted to tell you that our campaign to raise funds for the rescue, veterinary care, and sanctuary adoptions of chickens saved from the Kaporos ritual in Brooklyn this past week has garnered a pledge of $10,000 matching funds for the chickens. We are deeply grateful for this generous gift of care and assistance for the chickens and our non-stop Rescue Team, who are currently attending to the chickens while locating those chickens who were abandoned in the streets by the Kaporos practitioners yesterday at the onset of Yom Kippur.

As of today our online donations have reached $8,230.00. We need just $1,770 to reach our $10,000 goal. In addition, we have been contacted by supporters who are mailing checks to assist our Rescue operation.

Please donate what you can with our overwhelming gratitude for your care and support for the chickens, many of whom died this week locked in the transport crates in freezing cold and rain with no food, water, or protection from the weather by those claiming that their behavior amounts to an “atonement” for their sins: as if their callous cruelty were not itself a monumental sin.

Be assured that the Alliance to End Chickens as Kaporos is comforting these birds, and as our Rescue Team Coordinator Jill Carnegie said this week, even if they die from their abuse soon after they have been rescued, they are dying with dignity instead of in the garbage bags into which their companions were ruthlessly thrown, many of them bleeding, crying and still alive.

The Alliance to End Chickens as Kaporos is a project of United Poultry Concerns. Formed in New York City in June 2010, the Alliance is an association of groups and individuals who seek to replace the use of chickens in Kaporos ceremonies with money or other non-animal symbols of atonement. The Alliance does not oppose Kaporos per se, only the cruel and unnecessary use of chickens in the ceremony.
