As part of our mission to elect working class progressives, BNC actively seeks out teachers for our slate every year.
In 2020, we helped elect Jamaal Bowman, a former middle school principal and longtime education activist. Jamaal was immediately appointed Vice Chair of the House Committee on Education and Labor – a rarity for freshmen representatives.
Now Jamaal is running for re-election alongside BNC’s Katie Porter – also a former educator, known for bringing her classroom techniques into Congress with her famous whiteboard.
This year, we’re going to elect Becca Balint, a former middle school teacher from Vermont, to join them in D.C.
There are more than 3.6 million K-12 teachers in the United States, but only SEVEN have ever been elected to Congress. BNC is committed to recruiting teachers and other working class progressives for federal office to fight for the pay and labor protections teachers need to help our students thrive.
In fact, our own Adrienne Bell, Executive Director of BNC, is a longtime elementary teacher in the Texas public school system.
But running for Congress is hard, and the majority of our candidates have to continue working full time while running for office. That is not a sustainable way to run a campaign, and it’s rarely a path to victory.
BNC is working to build the resources needed to support candidates more fully through every aspect of their campaigns. That work takes time, people, resources, and infrastructure. Will you invest in the long term, sustained work of Brand New Congress by signing up for a monthly contribution of any amount?
