As early as the mid-1800s, the safety of lead pipes was suspect.
John,
For decades the lead industry has had one driving modus operandi: Con the American people to believe only lead pipes can secure a community water system.
As early as the mid-1800s, the safety of lead pipes was suspect. Accounts of children poisoned by the metal were rampant. Cities across America began banning the use of lead pipes for drinking water.
The industry refused to accept the emerging evidence of the dangers of lead pipes. Instead, in 1933, the industry association launched a massive “awareness” campaign to promote the benefits and importance of lead pipes in connecting homes to the water system.
Ninety years later, Americans — particularly those in lower-income communities — are painfully suffering from the deadly consequences of the industry blitz to aggressively market lead pipes. For decades, corporations peddling lead pipes knowingly and willfully created a water crisis to bloat their bottom line.
Today, in Chicago, for example, city officials are endeavoring to deal with the ongoing health and safety consequences of lead pipes still feeding water to 400,000 homes. One estimate calculates the city requires at least $8 billion for a cleanup.
John, the lead industry must be held fully accountable for its long history of deception and death.
SEEC members are fighting for clean water — but congressional Republicans keep cutting funding to assist communities in their efforts when we try to do more. Future clean water funding will be on the chopping block if Republicans grab back control in November.
Thanks to your help in 2020, SEEC PAC was able to re-elect over 95% of our pro-environment members to the U.S. House of Representatives — defying the odds on a night where Democrats lost seats. Now we are counting on you to help our SEEC members pass climate, clean energy and environmental justice policies in the 117th Congress while we undo the damage of the Trump Administration.
