Hi John, it’s Leader Joanna McClinton of the Pennsylvania House Democratic Caucus, and maybe PA’s next Speaker of the House.

I’m writing to you today because, for the first time in three decades, Pennsylvania is voting in fair districts, meaning we can elect a legislature that reflects the people.

That gives us the chance to protect our democracy and rights, fairly fund our schools, raise the minimum wage, and so much more.

But, John, fair districts don’t guarantee anything if we don’t get people out to vote in them. After decades of gerrymandering, exclusion, and neglect, that’s not a given. That’s why I’m asking you to donate $10 right now to support the efforts of the New Pennsylvania Project in expanding the electorate. Your contribution will go directly to engaging young voters year-round.

I have seen firsthand the disdain the Republican majority in Pennsylvania’s General Assembly holds for our people. In 2020, many voted to overturn the election and totally disenfranchise our voters, but in truth, they’ve disenfranchised our citizens for decades.

They pass legislation specifically crafted to make it harder to vote for immigrants, our youth, Black, Indigenous, and other people of color. They gerrymander themselves into a nearly unbreakable majority in both chambers, and they silence any other representatives who make it through.

Then, with all the power they’ve gained by disenfranchising millions of voters, they do nothing but spew hate, stop meaningful reforms, and further attack our rights. Even now, they’re trying to subvert our duly elected Governor’s veto by advancing amendments that would enshrine their attacks on our rights in Pennsylvania’s constitution.

John, to save our democracy, our rights, and our future, we must put an end to their chokehold over our state, and to do that, we must expand the electorate. That is why the New Pennsylvania Project’s work is so critical. Will you donate $10 right now to help them expand the electorate? Your contribution will go directly towards saving our democracy.

The New Pennsylvania Project was founded in May 2021 to expand Pennsylvania’s electorate, so it reflects the Commonwealth’s demographically changing population. In the next four years, NPP will engage and empower young residents and those living in underrepresented immigrant communities and communities of color. We register communities to vote, provide civic education about the issues that matter in their neighborhoods, and mobilize Pennsylvanians to vote in every election.
