OJJDP Recognizes National Bullying Prevention Awareness Month
October is National Bullying Prevention Awareness Month, a national campaign to raise awareness about the prevalence and consequences of bullying and to highlight prevention and intervention approaches for individuals, schools, and communities.
More than 22 percent of students ages 12–18 reported being bullied at school during the 2019 school year, according to the" ""Report on Indicators of School Crime and Safety: 2020 [ [link removed] ]. "
In October 2021, OJJDP launched a national initiative to prevent youth hate crimes and identity-based bullying [ [link removed] ]. OJJDP kicked off the initiative with a two-day virtual symposium [ [link removed] ] on identity-based bullying and youth-related hate crimes. It was followed by 13 webinars [ [link removed] ] on hate crime prevention strategies and seven youth roundtables [ [link removed] ] to elevate youth voices on the topic of hate crime, identity-based bullying, and radicalization of youth by hate groups. In addition, resources currently in development include a curriculum to prevent hate crimes by youth, a special report and a fact sheet.
OJJDP also supports StopBullying.gov [ [link removed] ], a federal website devoted to identifying and preventing bullying, including cyberbullying and identity-based bullying.
