You Made A Difference In 2019
Dear Friends,
Thanks to your generosity and support, Sea Shepherd Conservation Society was able to accomplish a great deal ‘For the Ocean’ in 2019. Together we have saved thousands of marine wildlife. Here is how you made a difference:

For The Vaquita
Sea Shepherd’s Operation Milagro is a campaign in defense of the vaquita. This autumn, we conducted an expedition to sight the highly endangered porpoise in partnership with Mexico’s National Commission on Protected Areas (CONANP) and Museo de la Ballena y Ciencias del Mar. Multiple vaquitas were sighted during this expedition.
With your help, we were able to document and publicize the flagrant disregard of federal law by organized poachers. Our mission to protect the vaquita has also resulted in joint operations with the Mexican government through their Navy and PROFEPA-- a Mexican administrative body related to the Department of Natural Resources and Environment.
2019 also brought the theatrical release of National Geographic’s Sea of Shadows—a riveting documentary featuring Sea Shepherd’s direct-action fight to save the vaquita. During Operation Milagro V, our brave crew removed 175 pieces of illegal gear and released 600 live animals, totaling to over 1000 nets and released over 3,700 animals since the campaign’s inception.

For The Wild Salmon
2019 is the International Year of the Salmon. Virus Hunter is Sea Shepherd’s science-based campaign aimed at revealing the impacts of salmon farms on wild salmon in British Columbia, Canada. Led by the RV Martin Sheen, which operates as a research vessel supporting independent and university-based scientists, the campaign simultaneously recognizes the leadership and voices of the First Nations peoples. Your support has exposed the truth and built community partnerships yearning for the end of fish farms in the region and the return of a balanced, healthy ecosystem.

For The Turtles
Sea Turtles are some of the oldest living creatures on Earth and have called our oceans home for over 500 million years. Of the seven species that exist, six are currently endangered. Since 2014, Sea Shepherd has conducted sea turtle protection campaigns in Costa Rica, Honduras, Florida, Antigua, Barbuda, and Nicaragua. While Operation Jairo 5 came to a disappointing conclusion with our patrol crew only encountering less than 10 nests over a 3-month period, your enduring support has helped us save these critical creatures.

For Hurricane Relief
60,000 lbs of critical aid --this is what Operation Good Pirates delivered to the Bahamas hit hardest by Hurricane Dorian. The crew of the M/V John Paul DeJoria distributed essential aid to survivors to meet their immediate needs and help facilitate the long and difficult process of rebuilding their lives. During this campaign, Sea Shepherd partnered with animal shelters to rescue abandoned animals in Dorian’s aftermath. In partnership with APS Bahamas and GlobalMedic, we were also able to install a solar power system in heavily hit Sweetings Cay.

For The Ocean
This year, we were given the opportunity to light up the Empire State Building, briefly turning the iconic skyscraper into the world’s tallest lighthouse. This momentous occasion is our tribute to you—our volunteers, our donors, our Sea Shepherds as you have continued to defend, protect and conserve our ocean.

2020 is a new decade. We are excited to announce our long term efforts in ending IUU fishing in the Eastern Tropical Pacific through Operation Treasured Islands. Your continued support and renewed commitment, will help us protect marine wildlife and their delicate habitats. The survival of our ocean is a constant challenge, but together, we can make a difference. Join us and remember: if the ocean dies, we die.
