Friend, It should go without saying: Oil pipelines, with their leaks, spills and other disastrous environmental consequences, have no place near the iconic Great Lakes. Yet instead of shutting down an existing pipeline, a proposal is currently being considered to dig a tunnel underneath the bedrock beneath lakes Huron and Michigan -- and then reroute the oil pipeline through it.1 We need to make sure the Army Corps of Engineers hears from as many people as possible as it starts the process of outlining the environmental impact of this proposed tunnel. After all, we already know what the consequences of continuing to run oil pipelines underneath the Great Lakes will be, don't we? Haven't we spilled enough oil and done enough damage to our oceans, our waterways and the irreplaceable wildlife that call them home? Enbridge's Line 5 pipeline carries 23 million gallons of oil and gas under the Straits of Mackinac between Wisconsin and Ontario and has spilled oil nearly thirty times.2 Instead of shutting down this old and dangerous pipeline, Enbridge is proposing a "Great Lakes Tunnel," which would be built deeper under the Straits and house a replacement line for that section of Line 5.3 We don't need deeper oil pipelines, and we certainly don't need more oil infrastructure putting the Great Lakes at risk. Fortunately, we have a critical opportunity right now to show the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers that we won't stand by and watch the oil industry destroy an iconic natural wonder like the Great Lakes. Thank you, Ellen Montgomery |
