Good morning. Here's a preview of today's show. Below, Marfa Public Radio's Travis Bubenik(who
[link removed]
who we heard from earlier this week) weighs in with another story …
A few days ago, Congress gave final approval to a bill that will turn a onetime segregated school in Marfa
[link removed]
into a national historic site , which is really a big deal in a lot of ways for this little ol’ town and the people who actually went to the school.
We’ve been following the efforts of Blackwell School alumni
[link removed]
to preserve its history for years now. Some of them have mixed memories – painful memories, even – of their time there. But the former students have nonetheless pumped just so much time and energy into making sure this important part of history doesn’t get overlooked, as the story of how school segregation played in the Southwest sometimes does. You can hear it in their voices when they talk about Blackwell: They want this story told.
One of the fun things about reporting on this story has been getting to know some of the former Blackwell students. They are just so cool – so full of memories and wisdom, and so generous with their time.

Jessi Silva , one of the alumni featured in
[link removed]
my most recent story, is actually my next-door neighbor. I called her a celebrity once and she laughed and shushed me, but she really is! She and other alumni have done some really important and inspiring work on this, and now that work is paying off in a way that’ll make sure this history never fades away.

Attorney General Ken Paxton’s office is ‘unmoored by disarray,’ report finds
"In the two years since eight of Paxton’s top deputies went to the FBI and accused him of crimes, we’ve seen a real exodus from the office of senior lawyers." The office's human trafficking division is among the hardest hit.

Low pay for personal care attendants means some Texans with disabilities go without services they need
Because caregivers can often make far higher wages doing other kinds of work, disabled people have difficulty finding and keeping attendants.

This reporter trailed the bus taking migrants from Eagle Pass, Texas to Chicago
"I would describe (the scene) as one of confusion. People knew that these buses to Chicago were going to be leaving at some point, but they had no idea when. It never really seemed certain for anyone until they were actually physically on the bus."

Burleson County
Founded: 1846
County seat: Caldwell
Population: 17,642
Panning the Brazos: Rural Burleson County is part of the sprawling College Station-Bryan Metropolitan Statistical Area. It’s also part of the Brazos Valley region, so named for the Brazos River running through the center of the collection of seven counties. The valley is where, we recently reported, a bitcoin mining operation is setting up that will

run on natural gas that would otherwise be

flared off . It’s part of a broader trend we talked about just this week – how rural Texas communities are

Hisssss! The small town of Snook sounds pretty awesome – chili cook-offs, chicken fried bacon, Czech treats and the like. It’s also, as we learned in an otherwise sobering

ode to the coral snake , the home of the

Reptile Hospice and Sanctuary of Texas , "where reptiles come to bask in the sun for the rest of their lives." Isn’t that sweet?
One last thing: Burleson County (don’t confuse it with Burleson, Texas) has Caldwell as its county seat (not to be confused with Caldwell County). Got that?
