Biden Working on Government Model for Woke Policy for Companies
Fox News: The Biden administration is working on a “national strategy” for establishing diversity, equity and inclusion policies for the government that officials hope can be used as a template for companies and other organizations throughout the country. The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) last week convened the first meeting of the Chief Diversity Officers Executive Council, a group that includes diversity officers from several federal agencies. The council will work to “implement and sustain” a government-wide plan for encouraging policies that support diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility (DEIA) in government hiring and employment. However, the OPM also said it wants to ensure the government is “our country’s model of excellence” when it comes to implementing DEIA policies ( Fox News).

US to Provide $625 Million in Military Assistance to Ukraine
Associated Press: The U.S. announced plans on Tuesday to provide an additional $625 million in military aid to Ukraine, a package that includes additional advanced rocket systems credited with helping the country’s military gain momentum in its war with Russia. President Joe Biden provided details on the latest package, which includes High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems, or HIMARS, artillery systems ammunition, and armored vehicles, in a call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The U.S. and Ukraine leaders spoke as Russia’s upper house of parliament on Tuesday formally approved the annexation of swaths of Ukrainian territory following referendums that Ukraine and its Western allies dismissed as fraudulent ( Associated Press). Hill: The U.S. has committed now committed more than $17.5 billion in aid to Ukraine since the beginning of the Biden administration, including $16.8 billion since Russia invaded Ukraine on Feb. 24, Secretary of State Antony Blinken said ( Hill).

Saudi Arabia to Raise Oil Prices to Aid Russia, Likely to Prompt US Countermeasures
Financial Times: Saudi Arabia is seeking to raise oil prices at a crucial meeting in Vienna in a move set to anger the US and help Russia. Riyadh, Moscow and other producers are set to announce deep cuts at a meeting of the Opec+ cartel on Wednesday, according to people with knowledge of the discussions. The size of the cut is still to be agreed but Saudi Arabia and Russia are pushing for reductions of 1mn-2mn barrels a day or more, although these could be phased in over several months. The move would probably trigger US countermeasures, including the additional release of oil from the country’s Strategic Petroleum Reserve, analysts said ( Financial Times). New York Times: Experts question just how much OPEC Plus will actually cut. Only two of the 23 countries in the group — Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates — are able to meet their current quotas. Energy experts say whatever OPEC Plus announces it will probably translate into a supply reduction of roughly 500,000 barrels a day, or about 0.5 percent of global supplies ( New York Times).

New Hampshire Sends 164 National Guard Members to Help Bolster Southern Border
New York Post: New Hampshire is deploying two National Guard units to the southern border, weeks after 50 migrants were flown to nearby Martha’s Vineyard by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis to highlight border issues. Gov. Chris Sununu, a Republican like DeSantis, announced that 164 members of the state’s National Guard would be deployed to Texas for a year, where they will assist Customs and Border Protection (CBP) in securing the border ( New York Post). HotAir: This was a nice move on Sununu’s part. There was no requirement for him to send his troops all the way across the country, but Greg Abbott had already put out a call for assistance with what Sununu correctly described as “the humanitarian crisis on our border.” Those who have been paying attention will likely note that none of the blue state governors who have been complaining about migrants being sent to their larger cities have stepped forward to help with the problem in this fashion ( HotAir).

Report Shows Armed Citizens Deter Active Shooters More Often Than FBI Claims
Fox News: A new report from the Crime Prevention Research Center (CPRC) argues that the FBI’s data contains “massive errors” when tracking active shooting incidents, undercounting how often armed citizens have thwarted active-shooting situations over the last eight years. Data released by the nonprofit shows that 34.4% of active shootings were thwarted by armed citizens between 2014 and 2021. However, FBI data show only 4.4% of active shootings were thwarted by armed citizens during that time period ( Fox News). Washington Examiner: “An analysis by my organization identified a total of 360 active shooter incidents during that period and found that an armed citizen stopped 124,” said John R. Lott, president of the Crime Prevention Research Center. Lott found that when he adjusted and corrected the numbers, the percentage of shootings stopped by a legal gun owner jumped from single digits to 34%-49%. He also argued that gun-free zones were a hindrance to good data and defenses that, if eliminated, would boost the percentage of shootings stopped ( Washington Examiner).

US, South Korea Launch Missile Test in Response to North Korea’s Drill
Reuters: South Korea and the U.S. military fired a volley of missiles into the sea in response to North Korea’s launch of a ballistic missile over Japan, Seoul said on Wednesday, as Pyongyang’s longest-range test yet drew international condemnation ( Reuters). CBS: The drill saw four South Korean F-15s and four U.S. F-16 fighter jets fire two shots at a set target, which the South Korean military said had demonstrated the will by both countries “to respond resolutely to any provocation from North Korea, the ability to precisely strike the origin of the provocation with the overwhelming power of the alliance, and a readiness posture for retaliation” ( CBS).

New HBO Max “Scooby-Doo” Movie Depicts Velma as Lesbian
The children’s show will appear on Cartoon Network. NBC: The creators of a new “Scooby-Doo” movie have finally depicted Velma as a lesbian on screen, after years of speculation about the beloved character’s sexuality but no definitive portrayals of her as queer in the popular cartoon franchise. Velma crushes on another female character, a costume designer named Coco Diablo, in a Halloween special, “Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo,” that was released online Tuesday and will debut on Cartoon Network on Oct. 14 ( NBC). New York Post: The company isn’t the only one to increase queer visibility in children’s entertainment of late. Earlier this year, Disney’s “Reimagine Tomorrow” announced a push for 50 percent of regular and recurring characters across the Disney universe will come from “underrepresented groups” ( New York Post).
