Tour site and learn about plans for homeless shelter in South Kitsap at open house Oct. 26
A community open house is planned from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 26 at the Pacific Building, site of a future South Kitsap homeless shelter, located at 4459 SE Mile Hill Drive [ [link removed] ]. Everyone is welcome to tour the facility and learn about ongoing site improvements. County staff and service providers will be available to answer questions and share details on the shelter project and its future operation.
"We're excited for this opportunity to connect directly with neighboring residents and the community to share how the Pacific Building will be used to provide emergency housing and supportive services in South Kitsap," said Kitsap County Commissioner Charlotte Garrido. "It's vital we have a facility in this area that offers people currently living outside safe shelter and help in transitioning to permanent housing."
Guided by the 2019 Kitsap Homeless Crisis Response and Housing Plan [ [link removed] ], Kitsap County purchased the building last spring for $1.5 million with a combination of local, state and federal grants. The location is ideal for its size, access to transportation and proximity to a large range of services.
The county is in the process of obtaining permits for planned upgrades to the building. Multiple volunteer events have been held at the site to clean up and maintain the grounds, parking lot and landscaping. During the open house, guests can leave written comments about the project. As permitting progresses, there will be a future opportunity to submit formal public comments through a public hearing process.
