Avoiding a government shutdown

Dear Friend,

I hope you’re enjoying the first few weeks of fall! I started off last week in San Diego joining a lot of great community events – from the Miramar Air Show to the Adams Avenue Street Fair – and ended the week back in D.C. voting to keep the government open. Keep reading for more of the week’s highlights:

Funding the Government through December 16th

Funding the government is Congress’ most basic responsibility, so I’m glad we could get it done last week. Although this bill is only a temporary stop-gap until December, it continues funding for vital federal agencies and programs, like early childhood education, nutrition assistance, veterans’ support, and housing that’s affordable. It also reduces families’ costs, helps small businesses and communities recover from natural disasters, and will help Ukraine defend its people and territory. I’m proud to have voted yes to keep the government open and give Congress time to complete our work for the 2023 fiscal year.

Adams Avenue Street Fair

I loved being back with everyone at the Adams Avenue Street Fair with great food, music, vendors, and rides for our community to enjoy!

28th Annual Pacific Islander Festival

It was so great to join the 28th Annual Pacific Islander Festival! It was an incredible showcase of music and dance performances, delicious food, and educational booths, highlighting the beautiful vibrancy of our Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander communities.

Japanese American Citizens League Gala

I was honored to join the San Diego Chapter of the Japanese American Citizens League to recognize local leaders and their work for the advancement of the API community.

We all share the responsibility to address racism and hatred in our country – and that includes acknowledging and atoning for past harms, which is why I’m glad the San Diego City Council recently apologized for its World War II-era support of incarcerating Japanese Americans. These traumas are still very real for many in the Japanese American community, and I hope this action serves as a powerful example for all of us going forward. It’s never too late to make things right and deliver justice.

100 Days Since Dobbs

It’s been more than 100 days since the Supreme Court overturned the constitutional right to an abortion in the Dobbs v. Jackson decision. Since then, Republicans have introduced a national abortion ban in Congress and Republican-controlled state legislatures have passed bans restricting and banning abortion across the country.

We won’t let this stand. We won’t stop fighting until everyone can access the reproductive health care that they need and deserve.

Miramar Air Show

It was so incredible to see the cutting-edge aircraft and the finest pilots in the world at the Miramar Air Show! This fantastic show brought together marines, sailors, civilians, and Top Gun fans alike to inspire the next generation.
