First, I would like to say a heartfelt 'Thank You' for your support and involvement. I am grateful to all who chipped in to help us finish the last quarter strong as we reached our recent FEC deadline – and thankful to all of you helping us ensure every voter understands the stakes in these upcoming midterm elections.
Because of you, we are beginning October in a strong position to stay on track to win on Election Day and offer support to Democratic candidates in tough races here in Maryland and around the country.
To fully appreciate the importance of this election, we need look no further than the Supreme Court. The Court's new term started this week and, even with Justice Jackson now seated, they are poised to resume their extremist rightward push.
The fall term will feature cases challenging existing precedents on affirmative action, voting rights, freedom of speech, LGBTQ rights, and environmental protection. The decisions will be made by a 6-3 conservative majority including Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett – the three justices nominated by Donald Trump and confirmed by Mitch McConnell's Republican Senate majority.
Trump and McConnell may not have seen eye-to-eye on everything, but they were in lockstep when it came to their drive to dramatically reshape our Supreme Court and the federal judiciary. Trump appointed more than 200 judges to the federal bench during his term – including nearly as many federal appeals court judges as President Obama appointed in TWO terms in office. And since federal judges have lifetime tenure, we will be feeling the impact of this for some time to come.
Senate Democrats have been busy confirming President Biden's highly qualified judicial nominees since we won the majority in 2020. But losing Democratic control of the Senate will end this work – and, along with it, any chance we have of preventing the federal courts from drastically revamping American jurisprudence.
It's been a long road, but there is still much to do. We need to fight as hard as ever over the next 5 weeks to protect and expand our majority in the Senate – and hold the House.
As always, thank you for your commitment to this important work!
Onwards,
Chris
