Ayahm—like many six-year-olds—is an active child, according to his mother, who says he’s always eager to move and play. His high energy makes it hard to believe that Ayahm has undergone nine surgeries in just one year due to a bone infection in his arm that he got following a fracture.
Years after violent conflict in Mosul, Iraq, Ayahm is one of many children who relies on Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF)’s lifesaving care. In fact, the majority of MSF’s patients around the world are children like Ayahm who deserve quality and compassionate medical care.
Conflict and natural disasters make it difficult for families to get care for their children and exacerbate existing issues that endanger children’s health, such as malnutrition. That’s why pediatric care is a major part of MSF’s vital work around the world.
Here’s how our work impacts children’s health in more than 70 countries:
Although the conflict in the city of Mosul, Iraq, has been declared over, the scars remain. MSF teams are filling critical gaps in access to affordable, high-quality health care. Our facilities located in Mosul continue to see large numbers of children and adults alike who need care.
MSF staff at Boost Hospital in Afghanistan treat 400 severely malnourished children under five years of age every month. Malnutrition is endemic in Afghanistan and soaring food prices, prolonged drought, and other factors have exacerbated the crisis.
Major flooding in Pakistan has impacted at least 33 million people–including 3.4 million children in need of immediate lifesaving support, according to UNICEF. Our teams have scaled up our response to address the most pressing needs as this emergency situation continues, providing essential medical care, safe drinking water, and other basic necessities.
