It’s former Senator Barbara Boxer from California, asking you to chip in $7 to the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee and stand with me against the dangerous right wing attack on reproductive health care.

But first, I hope you’ll hear me out. I first ran for election when abortion was illegal in almost every state, and I saw the needless agony and death that it caused. By the time I was elected to Congress, Roe v. Wade was decided. Yet still, almost every month for more than thirty years, I had to stand on the floor of the House and then the Senate, strongly defending the right to privacy and safe health care.

These debates were brutal. But I was proud to be part of a pro-choice caucus that did not allow the loss of this critical right. Sadly, now I see our country doing what it has never done before: Taking away a right that we have had for fifty years!

I have been a witness and a participant in the battle to protect abortion rights, and I can tell you personally: It’s a frightening time and we must wake up, step up, and fight back.

The Supreme Court’s recent Dobbs ruling gave the power over our bodies to state legislators and governors. It’s outrageous! Recently, I saw a TV segment where a young Republican state legislator pontificated proudly on his anti-abortion theories of reproduction. Really? These are the people who are starting to make laws that will decide the freedom and futures of our children and grandchildren.

These anti-abortion state laws are draconian. Some would send doctors to prison for performing life-saving abortions. Others will force birth on victims of rape or incest. And some, like Texas’s vigilante law, give people monetary incentives to spy on their neighbors and report people for seeking care!

This is why we must focus our attention on state legislative races. These races have a direct impact on whether or not we go back to the dark ages.

Now is the time: We must help elect state Democrats who respect all of us and who will protect all of us. If you can, will you chip in whatever you can afford to the DLCC today to ensure every last dollar can be spent fighting for Democrats that’ll protect the right to an abortion?
