2019 was another banner year for Grassroots International. Thanks to the generous solidarity of supporters like you, we were able to provide more than $3.1 million in cash grants and material aid to social movements and our partners around the world. Below, read some of our most popular articles on the resistance and hope our partners have been building throughout 2019.

From the Women’s March to the World March of Women

Like 2018, 2019 again opened with the Women’s March, just on the heels of the #MeToo explosion. Throughout the year we sought to deepen and expand a global vision in these amazing movements.

Diana Villa from Grassroots International was in Washington D.C. in January with our partner the World March of Women and our ally Grassroots Global Justice Alliance. We spent the year building an alliance for grassroots feminism thanks to the NoVo Foundation’s Radical Hope Fund.

The Joyous, Sometimes Labored Breathing of an Alternative in Brazil

Over a dozen Grassroots International supporters and activists joined us for a delegation to Brazil in June, to bear witness to the resistance and repression there. Tarso Ramos, a former Grassroots board member and current director of Political Research Associates, shares his reflections.

VIDEO: Haiti Stands in Solidarity with Puerto Rico

Tens of thousands of Puerto Ricans took down Gov. Ricardo Rosselló in July, in one of the many revolts around the world this year. Our partners and grantees were either at the heart of the protests, like Colectiva Feminista en Construcción, or were in solidarity with them, like this video from the PAPDA shows.

Haiti Protests Are Living Proof of Hope

Puerto Rico wasn’t the only country in revolt in 2019. Our partners in Haiti were thrust into struggle as well. Milourdes Augustin, the new Solidarity Program Officer for Haiti and West Africa, writes about the hope embodied in Haiti’s revolt.

Both revolts and repression are advancing around the world. From Haiti and Puerto Rico to Brazil and Guatemala, social movements need concrete solidarity to deepen the gains they've made and to meet the challenge of an insurgent right-wing.
