You may have bought a Christmas tree this year, but did you know that the City of San Diego gives FREE trees to residents to plant along your property frontage?

The best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago. The next best time is now.

Fact is, with all this talk about climate change, the simple act of planting a tree is one of the most important individual contributions we can make to our environment.

Trees cool our sidewalks and neighborhoods, reducing the need for energy to cool it down. Trees are a habitat for birds and other wildlife. Trees remove carbon from the air. And trees are beautiful!

As part of San Diego’s Climate Action Plan, we have a goal of increasing the City’s urban canopy coverage from 13% to 15%. That’s an ambitious goal, yet San Diego’s Free Tree Program is not well known.

That’s why, as your Mayor, I will lead a campaign to plant more trees throughout the city, and will personally join with community residents and businesses to plant trees in every district.

So this holiday season, I ask you to join me in getting a free tree from the City. And plant a gift that will give back to San Diego for decades to come.
